Here’s a fun totem pole project I found recently over at dickblick.com.
Air dry clay formed into animals and stacked on a dowel. I like how it is based on American Indian animal symbols, and requires a bit of attention to physical balance too.
• Air Dry Clay
• Wooden Dowels
• Acrylic paint
1. Students make a stand by placing the dowel in a ball of clay that is flattened so it will stand up on it’s own.
2. Small animal shapes are made out of the clay, and then centered and pushed through the dowel so they make a neat stack.
3. Repeat until the dowel is full of animals. Let dry for a day or two.
3. The animals are painted with acrylic paint.
