With a little assistance, this project can be done in two classes. Last week my afterschool kids put paper mache over the terra cotta flower pot from Michaels, and then around balls of aluminum foil. A coat of white paint was needed to make all the colors look “fresh”, so I did that step myself to keep the process moving along.
Today students painted their cones with a premixed peach color, and had many colors of acrylic paint to use for their ice cream flavors. I love how the older kids got into making the drippy toppings.
I’m pretty much obsessed with making my mache projects shiny before they go home, so I’ll take a few minutes to cover them with Mod Podge so they have that shiny ice cream look.
