Paper Mache Bowls and Colanders

I’m happy to have found the perfect form for my Paper Mache Bowl class.

The dollar store came through again with super cheap colanders. Their built in holes are perfect for helping the mache to dry. My sample bowl here has just a couple of layers. Students will spend another two classes adding more layers so their bowls with be nice and strong.

MATERIALS
• Paper Mache
• Newspaper
• Colander
• Masking tape, Sharpie

DIRECTIONS
PREP: This is my favorite paper mache recipe. I used about 2 gallons for 24 students.

PAPER MACHE RECIPE
1 cups all-purpose flour
4 cups cold water
4 cups boiling water
1/2 cup sugar
In a bowl, combine the flour and cold water. Add to the saucepan of boiling water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar. Let it cool and thicken before using.
CLASS ONE: Names are written on a masking tape and stuck to the inside of the bowl. Students apply about 3 or 4 layers of paper that have been dipped in mache and let dry.
CLASS TWO: Another layer of newspaper will be applied.
CLASS THREE: A layer of paper towels will be applied, which will help brighten to colors.
CLASS FOUR: The bowls will be painted.
CLASS FIVE: A gloss sealer will be applied, inside and out.
