The beginning of a school year is a good time to declare student goals. This project was inspired by a New Jersey middle school posting that was too cute to not try myself. In addition to writing practice, this format asks students to just draw the top half of their face, which is less intimidating that the entire face.

I think this project proves that creative writing projects don’t have to lose anything in either category, and gives students a great chance to share their personality.

MATERIALS
• Card stock paper
• Thin black marker
• Crayons

DIRECTIONS
Print the a template on card stock for each student.
Student Goals 1
1. Start by drawing the eyes in pencil, just above the paper. Follow the rule that two eyes should always be one eye-width apart.
Student Goals 2
2. Draw the top of the head, almost touching the top of the paper.
Student goals 3
3. Draw the rest of the face and fingers on the side. Student’s names go at the top and they are to finish the sentence “My goals for the 2012-2013 school year are…”. All lines are traced with a thin marker. The art is colored in with pencil crayons.
