Self Portrait Project with Tape

Self portrait art projects are fun when you mix up the media. Give your students lots of tearing practice with this one made from colored masking tape.

Anyone who is learning how to draw will tend to things the way they always do. By requiring them to make lines with only torn tape, they will have to do some problem solving with how they make lines, fill in areas, etc.

  • Colored paper, I like multipacks of card stock for more choices
  • Colored masking tape
  • Scissors

  1. Students lightly draw themselves in heavy paper with a pencil.
  2. Tape is torn in small pieces and applied to turn all the pencil lines into tape lines. I’d allow scissors for those that want to make small details like eyelashes, etc. The main lines though should be done by tearing. It’s not only faster, it’s good practice and will make a much more creative, fuzzy image too.
