I love how this project makes something very familiar with students but allows for all kinds of personalization, as in their favorite ice cream flavors. It also helps that the terra cotta pot has some weight and keeps even the tallest cones very stabile.
- Terra cotta planter holder
- Masking Tape
- Paper mache
- Gesso paint
- Acrylic paint
- Collage Pauge
WEEK ONE: Students make balls with newspaper. They wrap them with masking tape to keep their shape. Newspaper is torn into small strips and mached onto the terra cotta pots and wrapped around each ball. The balls are placed onto the pots and allowed to dry.
WEEK TWO: The ice cream and cone is painted with gesso, or a couple of coats of white acrylic paint to block out the gray of the newspaper.
WEEK THREE: The cones are finally painted with the desired colors, including spots for sprinkles.
WEEK FOUR: The cones are painted with Collage Pauge to give them a shiny finish. And ice cream needs a shiny finish, in my opinion.
