Clay Sea Star
This simple air dry clay starfish (or sea star!) lesson is the perfect intro project for young artists new to clay.
Using just a ball of air dry clay, students roll and cut a star shape, then shape and smooth it into a starfish form. With a bamboo or chop stick, they add tiny texture for that classic sea star surface.
Once dry, the white clay naturally resembles a real sea star, making it a stunning project that builds confidence for first-time sculptors.
Objective: Learn how to manipulate clay

Time needed: 45 minutes
How to make a Sea Star
- Supplies: Airdry clay, plate, plastic knife, chopstick

- Cut a quarter of a 2.5 tub of clay for each star.

- Soften with water and make a round disc.

- Draw a star with the chopstick, or trace a template.

- Cut out the star, lopsided legs are ok. Pick up the star and round the edges. Trim longer legs so they are all the same length.

- Use a chopstick or similar tool to press and make a texture on the surface. Let dry for several days, or until the clay turns white.
