About the Inspiration:
This art project honors the legacy of the women of Gee’s Bend, a small and remote Black community in Alabama. These talented quilters, who began their craft out of necessity in the 19th century, have since been recognized for their bold, innovative designs that reinvented the art of quilting. Their works have been exhibited in prestigious museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2006, the U.S. Postal Service even issued commemorative stamps featuring their quilts.
