Paddington Bear: From Page to Screen
The idea for Paddington came to Bond in 1956 when he saw a lonely teddy bear on a shelf at a London store. He bought it as a Christmas gift for his wife and later imagined stories about a small bear arriving in England.
Bond was deeply moved by images of children evacuees during World War II and post-war refugee children arriving in London with tags around their necks and suitcases. This inspired Paddington’s own story — an orphan bear arriving at a train station with a note reading, “Please look after this bear. Thank you.”
