Why This Lesson Works in the Elementary Art Room

This Elphaba drawing lesson taps into students’ love of musicals, fantasy, and all things Wicked. The steps break her character down into simple shapes and curved lines, so even reluctant artists can feel successful.

Students will love adding signature details like her pointy hat, flowing cape, and fancy broom — all while learning basic figure drawing skills.

It’s easy to adapt this lesson for Halloween or integrate it into a cross-curricular unit on theater or storytelling. With a ready-to-print PDF and clear video instructions, it takes the stress out of prep and helps you feel confident teaching a high-impact project your students will love.

Witches in Art and Pop Culture

Witches have long been a part of art history, often appearing in medieval paintings and 16th-century woodcuts as symbols of mystery, power, and fear. In the 1700s, Spanish artist Francisco Goya famously portrayed eerie supernatural scenes in works like Witches’ Sabbath, reflecting society’s unease with the unknown.

Over time, the image of the witch evolved — from scary to stylish, from villain to misunderstood heroine. In today’s pop culture, characters like Elphaba from Wicked flip the script. With her bold green skin, tall black hat, and powerful story of courage and difference, she’s become a symbol of strength and individuality. Bringing her into the art room gives students a chance to explore visual storytelling through iconic characters.
