Eric Carle (1929–2021) was an American author, designer and illustrator of children’s books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. He combined winsome stories and exuberant collages that appeal to young readers and adults alike.

Eric Carle Coloring Page

Materials

  • Drawing Paper. This is the good stuff you can buy in bulk for a good price.
  • Pencils. I like how this brand always makes nice dark lines.
  • Black Marker. A permanent marker will give you a dark black color.
  • Crayons. The larger packs are nice for more color choices.

Directions

Time needed: 45 minutes

  1. Draw a kind of egg shape in the bottom right corner.

  2. Add two circles for the eyes, and then draw smaller circles inside.

  3. Draw the slanted eye patch around each eye.

  4. Add the ears, nose and mouth.

  5. Draw the paws around the head. Add claws on the ends.

  6. Add a kind of rounded boxy shape in the back.

  7. Draw a back leg that lines up with the left side. Add claws.

  8. Add the other back leg in the space that is left over.

  9. Trace with a marker and color.
