How to Draw Moana Art Lesson
A “How to Draw Moana” drawing lesson is a great way to teach elementary students more more about her, and offer some good body drawing practice too. Moana now stars in her own Disney sequel — Moana 2, so she’s a familiar sight for many. When students follow this art lesson tutorial, it will show them how to draw Moana’s proportioned body shapes, and how to add the native clothing she wears.
Broken down into nine simple steps, the project has all of the details that make her recognizable, but not so many as to be frustrating for young ones to draw. Moana’s long wavy hair, skirt, sash and paddle are all included, which connect her to her Polynesian culture, and are important parts of who she is. And if you are wondering how true those details might be to real life, it’s good to know that Disney’s research included collaboration with cultural experts from the Pacific Islands.
The Cultural Significance of Moana
When students learn how to draw people from other cultures, they can gain a new appreciation for who they are, and what‘s important to them. Moana, for instance, rediscovers the art of wayfinding, which means to navigate by using the stars. She actually learns how to use her hand to keep track of the stars in the sky.
Polynesian names and languages are also dropped throughout the movie. A couple of examples are “Moano” for ocean, “Tala” for story in Samoan, and “Ohana” which is family.
All in all, not many art projects can make so many connections to additional drawing and cultural lessons, so it’s good to save the ones that do!
