Learning how to draw a cruise ship is a fun way for students to connect art with transportation, travel, and even a little bit of imagination. Whether they are studying different ways people move around the world, or just dreaming up a faraway ocean vacation, this lesson gives them a chance to draw something big, bold, and full of simple details.

This cruise ship drawing is especially helpful for beginners because it is made mostly from large, easy-to-draw shapes. Students can start with the main body of the ship, then add rows of windows, decks, smoke stacks, flags, and other small details to make it their own. The simple structure helps students feel successful, while still leaving plenty of room for creativity.

There’s also a nice little perspective lesson built into this project. Students can add seagulls in the sky and make the ones that are closer appear larger, while the ones farther away are drawn smaller. It’s an easy way to introduce the idea of size and scale, and how artists use those tools to show distance in a drawing.

The finished artwork makes a bright and cheerful transportation project, and it can also tie in nicely with lessons about oceans, maps, travel, or summer adventures. It also makes a great beginner painting project, as the large simple shapes are easy to draw and fill in with color.
