Drawing of a Horse

A brief history of Horses in Art
Today, kids who want to learn how to draw a horse can get a boost from a step-by-step tutorial. Horses are full of subtle curves—thanks to all those powerful muscles—so they can feel a little tricky at first. The good news is that when students learn to break the body down into a few simple shapes and then connect them, the whole horse starts to make a lot more sense. It’s a helpful way to see the form before getting caught up in the details.
Horses have also been a favorite subject in art for a very long time. Some of the earliest examples go all the way back to the prehistoric Lascaux cave paintings in France, estimated to be about 17,000 years old. Of the roughly 6,000 images found there, 364 are horses—proof that artists have been fascinated by them since the very beginning.
Centuries later, Renaissance artists were inspired by horses too. Masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Andrea Mantegna, and Titian all included them in their work. In 1482, the Duke of Milan even commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to create what would have been the largest equestrian statue in the world. Although Leonardo’s horse was never completed at the time, the idea lived on—and it was eventually replicated in the late 20th century.
Fast forward again to the American West, and horses show up everywhere in the drawings, paintings, and sculptures that capture life on the frontier. Cowboys and Native Americans are often pictured alongside them, and many artists dedicated entire bodies of work to these remarkable animals. Two of the most well-known are Frederic Remington and C.M. Russell.=
Whether students are drawing a horse for fun or as part of a history or art unit, it’s easy to see why horses have held artists’ attention for thousands of years—and why they’re still such an exciting subject to draw today.
