How to Draw a Horse

Finding a tutorial for how to draw a horse running, one appropriate for elementary age students, proved difficult so I made my own.

Horses are beautiful creatures, especially when they are running, so it’s no surprise that lots of children like to draw them. The trick though, is to get all those gentle curves of their legs and body just right.

This tutorial is made with some extra guidelines (you can draw them or fold your paper to get them) which will help you get proportion of your horse right. Drawing the most perfect legs ever still won’t look right if they are too large or too small for your horse body.

Time needed: 1 hour.

How to Draw a Horse

  1. Make guidelines. Draw the back.

  2. Draw the head.

  3. Continue the chest line.

  4. Draw front leg with hoof.

  5. Draw back leg with hoof.

  6. Draw belly and remaining legs with hoofs.

  7. Add tail, ear, mane, eye and nose.

  8. Erase line inside. Draw background.

  9. Trace with marker and color with crayons.

How to Draw a Horse Head

Of all the animals there are to draw, I think horses fall into a unique category as being one of the most loved, AND one of the most tricky. Even if you just focus on the head, their chiseled profile calls for some special attention to get all the hard and soft shapes just right. After all, if you get them to align in the right way, you have a beautiful and graceful animal. But if a few are out of place, things just look a little, well … awkward.

My new horse head tutorial offers lots of support to help students draw a head with a graceful 3/4 view and keep out a lot of the guesswork. If you use my suggested 16 box grid (you can either fold your paper to get them, or use page 3 of my PDF download) you’ll see that lots of the horse head lines fall right on some of the guidelines. If students pay close attention to them as they are drawing, they will really help get the size and shapes of all those curves in the right places.
