Food in Art: Why Artists Love to Paint What We Eat
From still life to Pop Art, food has always played an important role in the art world. Artists like Pieter Claesz and Clara Peeters painted detailed breakfast tables and desserts during the Dutch Golden Age, capturing the beauty and abundance of everyday life. In more recent times, Pop artist Wayne Thiebaud became famous for his bright, candy-colored paintings of cakes, pies, and—you guessed it—sandwiches.
Food is deeply personal and instantly recognizable, making it the perfect subject for young artists. Drawing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich invites kids to connect their daily routines to classic art traditions. They can choose different jelly colors, create custom bread textures, or design a fun background—just like professional artists who use food to express culture, memory, or joy. Show your students a painting by Wayne Thiebaud and they’ll instantly see the connection between their playful PB&J and his layered lemon meringue pie.
