Who was Berthe Morisot?

Berthe was born the daughter of a high government official, decided early to be an artist and pursued her goal with seriousness and dedication. She was part of an exhibition in 1877 where a group called first called themselves ‘impressionists’. Her insistence on design sets her apart from fellow Impressionists, who were more interested in color-optical experimentation. Berthe’s paintings were more about private moments and included members of her family, particularly her sister, Edma.
While Berthe was known for her painting, students can still draw like her by keeping things light and sketchy, as shown in the sample above. If they work with just a pencil, then add layers of colored pencil, and finish with just a partially finished back, they will have a drawing with many of the qualities that Berthe was famous for.

Step by step instructions to draw like Berthe Morisot

Draw the outer shape of the head.

Add the eyes and nose on the right side to start a 3/4 portrait.

Draw the eyelids and the eyebrows.

Add the mouth right under the nose.

Draw the ear on the side of the head.

Add the neck and shoulders.

Short hair option. Draw hair around the head. Erase the gray lines.

Long hair option. Add it around the head and erase the gray lines.

Color the skin and hair with colored pencils. Add a small shadow of color in the back.
