How to Make Pipe Cleaner People: Easy Kids Craft (Grades 2–5)
Inside you’ll learn how to make pipe cleaner people with 2 pipe cleaners. A simple, kid-friendly craft for grades 2–5 that builds fine motor skills.

How to Make Pipe Cleaner People Art Lesson
Pipe cleaner people are a perfect grades 2–5 project because they build fine motor skills in a way that feels like play. Students strengthen hand muscles as they bend, twist, pinch, and wrap the stems to form a head, arms, and legs — then “level up” their figure by wrapping a second pipe cleaner around it for extra weight and durability.
The steps are simple and repeatable, so you can model once and students can work confidently at their own pace. Best of all, the bendable limbs make it easy to create action poses, invent characters, and use the finished figures for scale in dioramas, STEM builds, and other construction projects.
Pipe Cleaner People and the Art of Gesture and Proportion
Pipe cleaner people are a fun way to teach gesture and proportion because students are basically building a 3D “stick figure” that can move. Just like artists start with a quick gesture sketch to capture action, students can bend their figure into running, jumping, dancing, or sports poses before adding any details. Proportion stays simple: make a small loop or spiral for the head, a straight section for the torso, bend the arms out from the upper torso (shoulder/chest area), and split the bottom into two legs.
Students can check for symmetry by comparing arm lengths and leg lengths, then intentionally bend one knee or raise one arm to show motion and personality. Wrapping the second pipe cleaner adds thickness and stability, helping the figure hold a pose better and making the “line” feel more like a sturdy form. This also turns the craft into a useful tool — students can place their pipe cleaner people into buildings and dioramas to show scale, adding instant storytelling to any construction project.

How to Make Pipe Cleaner People Step-by-Step Instructions
Time needed: 15 minutes
How to make Pipe Cleaner People
- Fold a pipe cleaner in half. Make the round head and twist.

- Shape and bend two arms, making them the same size. Twist to make the torso.

- After the torso is twisted, use the last of the pipe cleaner to bend and make two legs. Twist these many times so the look like one thick strand of pipe cleaner.

- Take a second pipe cleaner and wrap just around the head, and the torso. The legs and the arms do not need to be covered.

- If you twist your figure well, and wrap the head and torso tightly, you should end up with a little (approx 2″ tall) figure like this.
