Who Was Pocahontas? Teaching History Through Art
Pocahontas was a real historical figure, not just a movie character. She was born around 1596 as the daughter of Chief Powhatan, the leader of a powerful Native American confederacy in what is now Virginia.
Her real name was Matoaka, but she was called Pocahontas, which means “playful one.” She became known for her connection to the Jamestown settlers, especially Captain John Smith, and later married English colonist John Rolfe.
Many versions of her story are romanticized or inaccurate. That’s why it’s so valuable to introduce students to a respectful, age-appropriate version through art.
Drawing Pocahontas gives kids a chance to explore Native American history, identity, and storytelling while reinforcing how artists shape the way we remember people and events.
It’s a creative, visual way to encourage meaningful conversations, even in the art room.
