The holidays always bring an interest in easy Christmas drawings ideas. Santa, Elves, Candy canes, Christmas trees and and Gingerbread houses just to name a few. The good news is that they can be great subject matter to make pretty Christmas drawings while improving drawing skills too! Santa and an Elf offer some good body drawing practice, while Rudolph and Candy Cane show how to add some dimension. A few well-placed lines and shadows can turn a simple sketch turn into a lovely Christmas drawing!
As a former classroom art teacher, I spent years watching students go through the process of learning how to draw. I discovered that direct draw instructions on the front board sometimes worked, but it had its limitations too. The pacing was always tricky and it kept the whole process feeling a bit chaotic, which is not an ideal learning environment. The solution? Create my own easy drawing handouts, that students could follow on their own.
The biggest benefit about getting the process down on paper is that everyone could finally work independently. Tutorials showing each step suddenly turned a noisy process into a very quiet and happy classroom. Students could build their confidence, learn the value in following directions, and hopefully start a lifetime love of drawing.
Here are a few reasons why Christmas Drawings make for great art projects during the holiday season.
No messy art supplies. While you could certainly turn many of these projects into Christmas paintings, they are designed to work just fine as drawings. The media used to finish them could be crayons or colored pencils, or markers – all of which have some of the easiest clean up possible.
Drawing allows for more detailed work. While painting is wonderful and certainly needs to be explored too, drawing easily allows students to add more detail to their work. A painting of candy canes, for instance will no doubt be very colorful, but a drawing of candy canes, will allow young students to add curves their stripes so it looks more round, and maybe even a shadow or two. A Christmas tree painting made with an outline, is always pretty, but a Christmas tree drawing will let students add more layers and lots of little holiday decorations.
One class session projects. The struggle is real, when it comes to two part Christmas projects. There’s the constant sorting or work, students who missed the first class, and so one. Add in the mix of holiday and winter school shows that shorten your class time, and you have the makings of one crazy schedule.
